Things to do in Budapest

– Go to a food market – we love the Great Market Hall – for fresh food supplies and Hungarian souvenirs – make sure that you try the Lángos from the upstairs food hall

– Visit the beautiful Parliament buildings

– Walk over the Chain Bridge (or any of the other bridges) to the other side of the Danube

– On the Buda side take the funicular up to Castle District go to Buda Castle and wander around the beautiful castle district, you’ll see Fisherman’s Bastion and Matthias church

– Go up Gellert Hill and surrounds including the statute of libery and the cave church – there are stunning views over the city from the top of the hill

– Take the number 2 tram for a cheap scenic trip along the Danube

– Check out Andrassy Street – Budapest’s answer to the Champs-Elysees – a boulevard style street with lots of shops and bars/cafes/restaurants which runs from the city centre to city park – you can walk it or take the metro (M1 / yellow line) to where you want to go

– Along Andrassy Street you will find Liszt Ferenc Ter (near Oktogon metro station) which has many outside restaurants with good Hungarian food (but at tourist prices) – don’t worry the menus include English!

– Near city park you’ll find Heroes Square and the adjoining Museum of Fine Arts and the Hall of Art

– Make sure you go to at least one of the many thermal baths in Budapest – we recommend Szechenyi thermal baths in city park a short walk from Heroes Square. You can take a picnic and buy cheap beer and food inside

– At the House of Terror on Andrassy St you can find out how life was in Hungary during the period of German occupation

– Visit the gigantic reminders of the Soviet occupation of Hungary at Memento Park

– If you are looking for somewhere else to dine – try Raday Street – also known as Budapest’s Soho!

– Housing a sacred relic of King Stephen I, St. Stephen’s Basilica is the largest church in Hungary. There are lovely cafes and bars around the square in front on the Basilica

– There are a number of Synagogues and an old Jewish quarter to explore

– For a change of scene and pace why not take a cruise on the Danube – there are many to choose from! Or head to Margaret Island

– A short journey upstream from Budapest is the quaint town of Szentendre – the city of artists – you can go by boat or train from Batthyány tér train station on the Buda side

– Further a field the towns of the Danube Bend are said to be beautiful – the town of Esztergom is a former capital of Hungary

– Time for some more water fun in the sun? On the northern outskirts of the city (on the Pest side) you’ll fine Aqua World – there are buses available

There are of course many other things to see and do including a zoo, museums, galleries, shops, restaurants, cafes, bars etc etc. The above websites have heaps of other information apart from the pages we have directed you to. Here are some more interesting websites for information and ideas:

We found this dinky little website, which has some great information on restaurants, bars, accommodation etc.  The link will take you into the DiVino Wine Bar we discovered on our last trip and will definitely be organising a gathering at in April 2013.

Where to after Budapest? *updated

Once you are in Budapest you are in the heart of Europe and you are probably thinking of where to head to once our celebrations are over ….

This (German) train website will be very helpful in planning your onward journeys if you are thinking of seeing a bit of the country side at a more leisurely pace…

It appears that you cannot book through it more than 3 months in advance, but it is a useful tool to see where you can go and work out how long it takes to get there.

I have just found another fabulous website for those of you planning to jump on a train on your outward journey from Budapest. At this website you can either search by route number (see the map) or starting location.

If you are after luxury train travel check out the Danube Express – this looks fabulous!
